Requirements
Domain names can be from 2 to 63 characters long and may be made up of any combination of letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) or hyphens (-) but must not have 2 hyphens together in the 3rd - 4th position.
The .au name space
The Australian name space consists of domain names ending in .com.au, .net.au, .asn.au, .org.au, & .id.au.
The advantages of a .au extension to your domain name are that it becomes instantly recognisable as an Australian site. A number of Australian search engines such as Anzwers and WebWombat, will only list your site if it contains a .au extension.
The chances of a .au domain name still being available can sometimes be greater than other types because of the requirements necessary to qualify for a .au domain license.
To find out what the qualifications for an Australian domain name are call us at Net Maintain or visit the auDA website here.
.com names
.com, .net, .org, .info. biz, .tv are considered more internationally friendly domain extensions. If you trade or intend to trade internationally these extensions may have benefits for you.
Domain names in this name space have no qualification requirements and are issued on a first come first served basis. Unless your business has a very unique name it is unlikely that it will still be available in the .com format.
Other countries
Other countries have their own requirements as far a qualifying for a name is concerned so call us if you would like more information on registering a name with a certain country's suffix.
